NATURAL STONE BASEMENT POOL, REGENTS PARK
A salute to Peter Zumthor.'
The owners of this property are avid fans of The Therme Vals, but since Central London does not have the expansive views, settled on putting the pool in the basement complete with a gym, cinema room and wine rack. The entire room including the floor was finished in smooth quartzite split face tiles, There is a sheer descent waterfall that adds a bit of colour to the grey pool, and the gym has bright coloured accents.
Location : Regents Park, London
Project Cost : £250k
Finishing a basement pool in natural stone
Split-face stone gives depth and texture, but in a pool hall it must be chosen with care: low water absorption, a sealing regime that suits pool water chemistry, and slip resistance wherever bare feet go. Below the stone, the same waterproofing and pressure-tested shell applies as on every pool we build.
A basement leisure suite combining a pool, gym and cinema also needs careful air management. The pool hall is kept at its own temperature and humidity, and the dehumidification system stops moist air reaching the cinema and wine store. Waterproofing is designed to BS 8102.
