Luxury Basement Spa
Putting everything in one room.
The architects for this 10,000 sqft luxury home in Mayfair (achieved by combining two town houses) instructed us to put a natural stone clad spa, marble ‘Hammam’ steam room, sauna, showers, two cold water features and sunken seating all within one room.
The brilliance in design is to maintain different temperatures in different parts of the same room, and we used air curtains to separate the dry and wet areas.
Location : London
Project Cost : £200k
Designing a basement wellness room
A sauna wants dry heat around 80–90 °C; a hammam wants saturated steam at much lower temperatures; a spa pool adds constant evaporation. Putting them in one room means planning the air movement first: where moist air is extracted, where dry air is supplied, and how the zones are kept apart.
Below ground, the room also needs waterproofing to BS 8102, a dehumidification system sized to the combined moisture load, and drainage falls that keep water away from the sauna and seating. Natural stone and marble finishes are specified for continuous wet use.
